Private Railway Stop Kocour
The stop acts as a gateway to the brewery, a reminder of its history, and a living symbol of a place where movement, light, and industrial poetry intersect. Its simple volume is formed by two slightly offset cubes, evoking the shape of wooden brewery crates and beer cases. Inside, a massive bench runs parallel to the tracks. At its end stands a steel sculpture of a cat - the brewery’s logo - giving the structure a distinct identity.

Located near the Czech-German border, adjacent to the Kocour Brewery in Varnsdorf, this is the first railway stop in the Czech Republic to be part of the public transport system while being privately operated. Its significance lies not only in connecting the city and the brewery to the cross-border transport network, but also in its symbolic link between daily mobility and the industrial history of the site.
The architectural concept draws from the atmosphere of the brewery and its material language. The simple volume is made up of two slightly open cubes, referencing brewery crates and packaging. A solid bench extends along the track, and at its end stands a steel cat sculpture, the iconic logo of the brewery, which imprints a unique identity on the entire structure.
The choice of materials emphasizes the industrial character. Heavy steel sheets, 20 millimeters thick, are left to weather naturally. Over time, this transforms the object into a living structure whose appearance evolves. The sheets are perforated with circular openings shaped like the brewery’s logo. During the day, light passes through into the interior. At night, LED lighting shines outward through the perforations, projecting points of light into the landscape. The floor is made of black powder-coated steel grating, which develops a patina over time. In high-traffic areas, the zinc coating gradually becomes visible, creating a visual record of movement and time.
The interior offers basic comfort - a sheltered view of the tracks, a bench for waiting passengers, and timetables presented in custom polycarbonate holders. Playful details lighten the otherwise strict form, including a bottle opener and a receptacle for beer caps, subtle humorous elements that tie the stop closely to its environment.
The Kocour Brewery Stop is more than just a shelter along the tracks. It is an industrial sculpture that connects transportation with tradition and contemporary architecture. It acts as a gateway to the brewery, a reminder of its roots, and a living symbol of a place where movement, light, and industrial narrative converge.
